The art of massage has been practised by the human race, throughout all parts of the globe, for as long as records can tell us. Long before medicine and allied sciences as we know them today were even understood, massage therapy was a vital part of healthy life. The Greek Empire, famous for its athletes and games, developed gymnasiums which not only helped to train young athletes but also treat their injuries. This treatment was in the form of massage. Massage is the manipulation of the soft body tissues (i.e. muscles, skin, blood vessels, tendons and ligaments). This manipulation is performed with the hands. Its purpose is to produce therapeutic effects on the systems of the body. Just as every person is unique in their make up, so every massage should be individual to suit the client. Massage is a skill which requires a great understanding of the human anatomy and physiology.
